Disruptive vs The Hiring Economy — Why We’re Going Against the Grain in Our Hiring Process
by Miranda Marsh • May 13, 2022
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 47 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs in 2021 — an outstanding mass exit from the workforce now widely called the Great Resignation.
In March 2022, over 4.5 million people quit their jobs, making it the highest monthly quits number on record. Job openings have outnumbered unemployed workers by about 5.5 million, and it’s not slowing down.
In the marketing industry specifically, quit rates are up, and the demand for marketing talent is greater than the supply — it’s an employee’s market, and top talent is going quickly. What an exciting challenge for our industry!
While top talent goes fast, many employers have to make quick decisions as they play the Great Resignation game. Still, we are movers and shakers in the industry, following our unique hiring process to ensure our candidates fit within the Disruptive culture and align with our core values, vision, and mission while staying under our 30 days to hire rate.
Disruptive is going against the grain as we reframe the hiring process as the Great Negotiation. We encourage our employees to negotiate their pay by researching the current market value and finding what they believe they are worth. We want to be the company people come to after this Great Resignation because we offer competitive market pay, a people-first culture, flexibility, career growth, and a current team that doesn’t want to leave.
As people search for what lights them up and challenges them to grow, the Great Resignation will eventually die out. Surveys show that compensation is not the number one reason people leave their jobs. Instead, it is because of company culture, respect, appreciation, flexibility, and the option of a remote environment. The innate human desire is not for money; it is for fulfillment. Therefore, prioritizing the human over the employee by offering development and coaching to support learning and growth is a more impactful tool than salary.
We are proud of our hiring process and what we have to offer at Disruptive. Of course, we are competitive in compensation, but we continue to attract candidates who are excited about the culture and opportunity to learn and grow at Disruptive, not about the number on the paycheck.
As other employers continue to play the Great Resignation game, we will confidently continue going against the grain to create a solid culture and environment that drives candidates based on our core values, vision, and mission.
