Marketers Everywhere Hate Their Job. We’re Fixing That, Starting Today.

by Chad de Lisle

You’re the only person in the building who fully understands the gap between what your CEO thinks marketing should produce and what marketing can actually produce with the budget, timeline, and team you’ve got.

You carry that gap alone. In every meeting. In every Monday morning Slack message asking why the cost per lead went up, before anyone’s even had coffee.

That’s not a you-problem. It’s the most common problem in marketing leadership today, and almost nobody names it out loud.

THE PROBLEM: EVERY MARKETING LEADER IS FIGHTING THE SAME WAR IN PRIVATE

Talk to enough marketing directors, VPs, and CMOs, and the same confession keeps showing up, almost word for word: “I don’t know if my CEO actually trusts me, and I don’t know how to fix that.”

It’s not a skills problem. Most of these marketers are excellent at their jobs. It’s a trust problem. The CEO sets a destination without fully explaining it. The marketer executes against a target that keeps shifting. Neither person can name what’s actually broken, so the tension just sits there, showing up as micromanagement on one side and quiet resentment on the other.

We call this the Trust Gap. It’s the single biggest reason marketing is either the best job in the world or the worst one, and almost never in between.

We’ve lived on both sides of it. So today, we’re doing something about it.

Today we’re launching the Indispensable Marketer Show, along with the social channels that go with it. Episode 1 is our CEO, Jacob Baadsgaard, and our Head of Marketing, Chad de Lisle, on camera, walking through the real version of how they closed their own Trust Gap. Including the part where Chad almost got let go.

THE FRAMEWORK: VSET

The show, and the book behind it, exist to teach one operating system: VSET. Vision, Strategy, Execution, Team. Four layers, built to answer the question sitting underneath every marketing leader’s stress: does my CEO trust me, and if not, whose job is it to fix that?

Vision is where it starts, because you can’t execute toward a destination nobody’s named. Most CEOs can’t articulate their company’s Why in one clean sentence. Not because they’re being difficult. Because nobody has ever sat with them long enough to extract it.

Strategy translates that Vision into a map both people can check their work against. Execution proves the vehicle is actually moving, with evidence, not vibes. Team makes sure none of it depends on one person’s memory or goodwill.

THE PROOF

When Jake finally got clear on Disruptive’s Why, the decision that followed was the hardest one the company ever made. We walked away from 450 clients, roughly 70 percent of our roster, because they weren’t who we existed to serve.

We lost 30 percent of our revenue that year. It’s still the best business decision Jake has ever made. The remaining clients generated the majority of our revenue with almost none of the headache, and the team’s energy came back almost immediately.

That’s what Vision looks like when it’s real. Not a poster on the wall. A filter that costs you something the moment you take it seriously.

That story, and the rest of what it took to close the gap between Chad and Jake, is now a book. The Indispensable Marketer book releases October 6th.

TAKE THIS AND USE IT MONDAY

🎯 For Marketing Leaders: Ask yourself the question that started all of this. If you had to explain why your company exists in one sentence, could you? If not, that’s your starting point, not your CEO’s homework to hand you.

📊 For CEOs: The next time your marketing leader misses a number, ask what’s underneath it before you ask what happened. Most performance problems are trust problems wearing a metrics costume.

THE TRUTH

Marketing doesn’t have to be the worst job in the world. We’ve watched it become the best one, but only once the Trust Gap between the marketer and the CEO actually closes.

That’s not a personality fix. It’s a framework, applied honestly, by two people willing to be in the room together.

Watch Episode 1, follow the show, and get on the list for the book. Everything’s live now on the Indispensable Marketer website.

P.S. — We turned away 80 percent of a million-dollar client relationship because it didn’t match what we believed in. That’s the same instinct behind walking away from 450 clients. Belief that doesn’t cost you anything isn’t belief. It’s decoration. The show and the book both exist to prove that out, in real numbers.
