Your AI Is Only As Good As Your Strategy
by Chad de Lisle
Every marketing leader I know has the same folder now.
A graveyard of AI prompts. “10 prompts that will 10x your content.” “The only ChatGPT prompt you need for ad copy.” Saved, tried, mostly abandoned.
Here’s why most of them didn’t work.
The output sounded like marketing. It didn’t sound like your company.
I read something this week from another marketer that put words to it well: AI doesn’t fix a weak strategy, it just helps you produce that weak strategy faster. If your positioning is unclear, AI writes unclear positioning at scale. If you don’t actually know your customer, AI writes to a customer that doesn’t exist.
He’s right. AI is a multiplier, not a strategist. It amplifies whatever you feed it.
Which means the real question isn’t “which AI tool should I use.” It’s “what am I actually feeding it.”
THE PROBLEM: MOST MARKETERS ARE FEEDING AI PROMPTS. THEY SHOULD BE FEEDING IT CLARITY.
A prompt is a request. It has no memory of your business, no understanding of what your CEO actually signed off on, no idea why your last three campaigns worked or didn’t.
So every time you open a new chat, you’re starting from zero. Re-explaining your positioning. Re-pasting your brand voice. Hoping this time the output sounds like you instead of like every other company that typed a similar prompt.
That’s not a tool problem. That’s a strategy problem wearing a tool costume.
THE FIX: TRAIN THE AI ON YOUR VSET, NOT ON A PROMPT
This is exactly why we built the AI Sidekick into the Indispensable Marketer cohort the way we did.
Every part of VSET you complete trains the Sidekick on your business. Your signed Vision stacks into your Strategy. Your Strategy stacks into your Execution. Your Execution stacks into your Team. By the end, it isn’t a generic AI tool answering generic prompts. It’s your own clarity, made permanent and queryable.
Here’s what that looks like in practice, not theory:
- Every brief, on-vision. Campaign briefs, creative direction, and positioning get drafted against the Vision your CEO actually signed off on, not generic industry best practices scraped from a thousand other companies.
- Every room, defended. Board deck due tomorrow? Your Sidekick already knows your math, your funnel, and your scorecard cold, because it was trained on the real numbers, not a summary you typed in a rush at 11pm.
- Every hire, onboarded in days, not months. A new teammate reads your bound Operating System, works alongside your Sidekick, and is speaking your language inside a week instead of a quarter.
- Every quarter, compounding. Update a workbook, and the Sidekick retrains on it. Your clarity compounds. So do your results.
That’s the difference between AI hype and AI that’s actually useful. Hype gives you a faster way to sound generic. A Sidekick trained on VSET gives you a faster way to sound like yourself, at scale, under deadline, in front of your CEO.
TAKE THIS AND USE IT MONDAY
For Marketing Leaders: Before you write another AI prompt, ask whether the tool actually knows your Vision and Strategy, or whether you’re re-explaining your company from scratch every single time. If it’s the latter, you’re not using AI. You’re babysitting it.
For CEOs: If your marketing team’s AI output still needs heavy editing to sound like the company, that’s not a training issue with the tool. It’s a sign the strategy underneath it was never made explicit enough to teach.
One change this week: Pick one AI tool your team uses regularly. Feed it your actual Vision and Strategy documents, not a prompt. Compare the output to what you were getting before.
THE TRUTH
AI didn’t create the gap between good marketing and generic marketing. It just made the gap move faster.
The marketers who win with AI aren’t the ones with the best prompts. They’re the ones who did the VSET work first, so there was something real for the AI to amplify.
If you want to see what an AI Sidekick trained on your own Vision, Strategy, Execution, and Team could actually do, send me a DM. I’ll walk you through it.

P.S. — If your AI output still sounds like everyone else’s, that’s not a prompt problem. It’s a clarity problem. VSET is how you fix the clarity. The Sidekick is what happens when that clarity gets remembered instead of retyped.
