What Are Core Values and Why Do They Matter?

What are core values? Core values are qualities that represent an organization’s highest priorities and fundamental driving forces. They are the heart of what your organization believes. For example, our four core values are Look Inward First, Get Curious, Choose to Grow and Care for the Individual. These core values are what make Disruptive different.
We believe in the power of businesses to make a positive impact by bringing solutions to the world. Our purpose is to support this vision and help everyone realize and live their potential as we focus on the meaning of our core values.
The purpose of life is to learn and grow through our experiences. Some of life’s experiences can be uncomfortable, causing us to retreat and run away or lean in and gain self-awareness. Choosing to lean into those painful feelings and experiences is where we come to realize and live our potential, which is our vision at Disruptive. Embracing this idea cultivates a love for learning and resiliency—both essential for great accomplishment. Our purpose is built on our four core values:
- Look Inward First – At Disruptive, we strive to establish an empowering culture where our clients and employees have the confidence and self-awareness to look inward and take challenges head-on, using that power to influence outcomes.
Leaning into those growth moments allows us to draw out the very best within us, resulting in new ideas and possibilities that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. This helps us reach our goals more effectively than if we resist or avoid those challenges.
- Get Curious – In business, it’s essential to have excellent communication and build relationships of trust. Self-curiosity is a skill that we can (and should) practice as much as possible. Rather than jumping to blame, getting curious about ourselves is an important step in encouraging mutual understanding and synergy.
By understanding ourselves better, we can influence others by developing a deep understanding of their needs and perspectives. Self-curiosity is a powerful tool that can help us grow and become our most authentic selves.
- Choose to Grow – Choosing to grow is one of the most challenging aspects of life. It requires change and a step into the unknown, which can be uncomfortable. However, while choosing to grow is difficult, it is rewarding.
We encourage our employees to embrace a growth mindset. Adopting a growth mindset drives motivation and achievement. We’re all faced with choices daily, but some will always make life better.
- Care for the individual – Caring for the individual is the foundation that underlies all other three values. It starts with ourselves and extends to those we interact with (colleagues, loved ones, clients, etc.) – treating people as people. Being loving and caring toward ourselves and others tends to come from a better place when seeking a true win/win/win.
It’s natural for our people at Disruptive to live by our core values. Too often, we, as humans, get consumed with ourselves and lose our sense of purpose and happiness in life. The best way to reset is to look inward, get curious, choose to grow, and let go of ourselves as we care for others and see how we can serve those around us. When we lean into life’s moments of self-awareness and use these core values to navigate the discomfort, we will find learning and growth through experiences, which is what life is all about.
